Here is yet another article highlighting the problem HR departments face. while everyone is debating what would be the best way to verify employees nobody is designing a program to get illegal immigrants work visas. That in itself would solve the problem, i am not saying give everyone a visa or temporary work card. only those who have been working here already for a long time and have reputable references proving so. http://www.hreonline.com/HRE/view/story.jhtml?id=18579056
This article http://smallbusiness.chron.com/inclusion-strategies-immigrants-workplace-10310.html has a great twist on the immigrant in the workforce. historically it has been a challenge for management to train employees due to language barriers. this article highlight the assets these immigrants are. it communicated the importance of diversity in the workforce and how it can attract more customers. usually language barriers are seen as a negative for managers, but in this case it highlights the positives of that extra language in the workforce. more languages=more customers. it also goes into great detail about how to train and be sympathetic of their adjustment. i really enjoyed reading it and i think you guys might also.
There has been an increasing trend in state laws allowing workers to receive workers comp benefits. this is a great step forward towards reform. it showing the general acceptance of these workers. Allowing benefits protects them from employers who only hire them to deny them those benefits. in this article http://www.workforce.com/articles/illegal-immigrants-covered-by-nebraska-workers-comp-system-court . A courts decision allowed an employee benefits after being severely injured on the job site. The court decided that the benefits should be allowed against the employers benefits. this is a great leap in ethics as this particular employer was willing to deny benefits, as it intended to do in the first place.
in my few years working as a clerk for my Ag business company i have come across E-Verify. When Photocopying various forms a tough always lingered, are these forms accurate. well as it turns out they most likely were not. who is to blame in this case? the person submitting false documents or the person taking them as accurate. there is big controversy in big business because of this. i came across an article that attacks E-verify as it doesn’t protect against identity theft. what does this mean for managers? The current trend suggest that they are to blame. i think not the problem lies in immigration reform failing to come to acceptable terms and allowing illegal immigrants to stay as guest workers or permanent residents is causing a spike in identity theft. this new trend is encouraging the black market sale of Social Security numbers which are stolen then sold to illegal immigrants that are looking for jobs.
Here is that article
For the last couple of years as the unemployment rate fluctuates between 8-10% in Santa maria, California the demand for workers increases. why is this? the problem lies with the type of work that is in demand. close too 2000 workers are needed in this area yet the unemployment rate grows. the work needed in this are consist mainly in agriculture. Most Americans do not want to take jobs in this field and the local economy there is taking a hit. the solution is immigration reform. here is a link to a video of the crisis from a local news station http://www.ksby.com/news/local-growers-face-labor-shortage/. this a prime example of what would happen if illegal immigrants are not allowed to work. they are not taking jobs if nobody wants them. what does this mean for management? Management is forced to turn the blind eye to fake documentation and in doing so run the risk of harsh penalties. This is the beginning of a new trend. Managers are willing to take the risk of penalties because what they stand to loose is much more than the penalties. here is that link again
throughout the years there has been a lot of coverage in the media about illegal immigrants in the workforce. The issue that doesn’t get much coverage is the difficult task of the HR department at places of employ. The HR department is responsible in verifying the validity of workers documentations. i came across an article from 2007 that has a brief explanation of this. it highlights the penalties of failing to do so. i agree that an HR department should verify identities, but it is a difficult task as these workers have families and they need jobs. not employing them would take a toll on social services. amnesty would help fix this problem allowing some of these folks to get jobs easily and contribute to the local economies in which they work. it would be beneficial for small agricultural towns it would stimulate spending and in turn stimulate growth without the harsh punishments put forth by the government. Keep in mind the jobs that they are inquiring about are manual labor jobs at minimum wage that most Americans are reluctant to take. in Santa Maria, California a year or so ago when the local authorities there cracked down hard on these workers millions of dollars where lost in rotting strawberry farms that no one would work in. this is the article
i came across a nice article today that laid out this subject quite well. It lays out quotes from influential people in a clear yes, and no format. i wasn’t aware of all the support that illegal immigrants have. i personally love the quote by the service employee international union, and i agree with it 100% everyone acts as illegal immigrants are stealing tax dollars trough social services. the truth of the matter is that the majority of them pay taxes. check the article out
What does amnesty mean for managers? there is the obvious benefit of cleaner paperwork. there is no general system to verify whether a green card or social is fake so when a manager is presented with a fake card we have to trust its validity or spend a couple of hours trying to verify it. amnesty would do many great things for this country, we live in a country that was founded by immigrants i myself am i second generation immigrant. amnesty would provide people that are currently employed in the us a peace of mind. it will also provide business and managers a stable workforce.
Are Drivers licenses a good idea? i believe they are for the most part the illegal immigrant labor force is driving without one allowing them access to special drivers licenses will most likely make roads safer. drivers licenses will ensure that the laws of the road are known and having to past a test would prove that. What does that mean for managers? managers can rest easy knowing their work force will not loose their vehicles on the way to work and that the crews will be safer drivers on the properties they are working in reducing possible incidents.
